Press Statement released yesterday by People Before Profit Foyle:
“The fact that a Catholic family has been intimidated out of Drumahoe is a total disgrace”, said People Before Profit council candidate Davy McAuley.
“The fact that a Catholic family has been intimidated out of Drumahoe is a total disgrace”, said People Before Profit council candidate Davy McAuley.
Mr. McAuley - himself from Drumahoe - is standing in Waterside.
“It is important to understand that these actions are unrepresentative of the people of Drumahoe,” said Mr. McAuley. “It really is a small group who are on a sectarian rampage in the area. But in Drumahoe, as elsewhere, they manage to silence the real voice of the people through intimidation.
“Many are simply afraid to speak out, mostly because they feel they cannot take a chance. It doesn’t take a majority to impose their views and actions on a community.
“There are many social and economic problems affecting the people of Drumahoe. This sort of action does absolutely nothing to solve anything for the people. It serves only to divert attention and energy away from what’s urgently needed.
“In the longer term, we need politics which bring people together, which concentrate on the economic issues which affect working-class people in whatever community.
“In the short term, we have to encourage residents to stand up to the bigots - and to demand that political parties, especially those which purport to represent local people, should be active on the ground denouncing this behaviour and urging people to stand up for their neighbours.”
