Press Statement issued on Sunday by Eamonn McCann, People Before Profit candidate, Foyle:
The futility of the bombing which killed PSNI member Ronan Kerr in Omagh on Saturday must be clear to everybody - apart from the people who carried it out.

No number of references to similar incidents during the Provisional and other IRA campaigns in the past can justify the killing of a human being in circumstances where the aims of the organisation involved cannot be advanced. All that has resulted is heartbreak for a family.
As far as we are concerned, “armed struggle” was never an acceptable or viable tactic. The Provos carried on their armed struggle for a quarter of a century, then called it off when they realised it wouldn’t deliver.
Are the Republican groups set on continuing the armed struggle going to fight a bigger, better, longer war than the Provos? Hardly. The tactic appears to have become not a tactic at all but a principle.
The cruelty and grief inflicted on Saturday has no justification. We call for an end to all such incidents. We urge those involved: if you wish to pursue the struggle, seek another way. The road you are on leads nowhere.
